Village Considering Train Station Relocation To Grainger Property

Following the decision to purchase the 10.3 acre Grainger property, the Village recently announced that it is considering moving the downtown Metra station to the site at 1657 Shermer Road. Village President Sandy Frum commented that the Village has received numerous inquiries about the potential use for the property. For the past few months she said, the Village has had preliminary discussions with Metra representatives about moving the train station south from its current location.

“This would increase our commuter parking inventory by 20% and reduce the amount of time Shermer Road is currently blocked by commuter trains stopped at the station,” said Frum. She added that the Village is in the process of drafting a Memorandum of Understanding to work together with Metra to determine the feasibility of the move.
The Village recently closed on the purchase of the property for $8 million with an agreement to lease the property back to the company on a short-term basis until Sept. 30. The property includes an 186,000 square foot office and warehouse building.
Grainger announced previously that it plans to move its operations to its corporate headquarters in Lake Forest.
