The Village of Northbrook has completed a series of public meetings to discuss an update on who is required to have a business license and associated fees, as well as to establish an optional business registration category that will be rolled out later this year as a tool for communication with the business community.
These changes are the first of a two phase process that aligns with technology updates the Village will debut in May 2026 which will result in an interactive platform for businesses which will feature a portal for information, payments, and renewals.
As a reminder, all current Business Licenses (whether issued in 2023 or this calendar year) are valid thru November 1, 2024.
The technology improvements in the first phase will be online this fall when renewals for a 2025 license will be opened in October to process online applications and payments due no later than November 1, 2024. All licenses issued at that time will be valid thru April 30, 2026 to align with the second phase of technology updates.
Updates to the structure and fees for business licenses include a reduction of the many types of license categories and fees. The new framework includes the following:
Additional details are pending for new categories related to businesses that will be required to register this fall including care facilities (both for adults and children), industrial/manufacturing, and solicitors. An optional business registration category will also be provided for not-for-profits, educational institutions, faith-based institutions, and governmental offices/facilities.
