Matt Settler Recognized as Northbrook Chamber Volunteer of the Year

The Chamber is pleased to announce the winners of the Annual Business Awards, honoring members who have excelled in the areas of business practices, corporate citizenship, and service to the Chamber. The award winners, profiled below, will be recognized at the Annual Meeting and Dinner on Monday, March 2.

Matt Settler, Richter Insurance
Volunteer of the Year
The Volunteer Award recognizes an individual who consistently helps the Chamber achieve its goals.
Many Northbrook residents are familiar with Matt Settler of Richter Insurance from his tireless work as President of Northbrook Civic and Co-Chair of Northbrook Days. Chamber members, however, know him as one of this organization’s most consistent and committed participants. The Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes Matt for his breadth of involvement and willingness to step up to help in all kinds of situations.

For Matt, volunteerism was a value that he learned from a very young age. Watching his parents serve in leadership roles in their synagogue, neighborhood associations and other groups made it a natural choice for him to start volunteering by the time he was fifteen. “Growing up, my family was just always involved in everything. It was something that really stuck with me,” he recalls.

He also applied a passion for stage performance and an entrepreneurial spirit to a DJ entertainment business that he started in college. A gig at Northbrook Days 20 years ago was the genesis of a deep connection to the Northbrook community for the resident of Buffalo Grove; organizers of the festival encouraged him to become involved in Civic year-round, which eventually led him to become a Chamber member in 2015. He also was a member of the Northbrook Leadership class of 2016.

Since then, Matt has become a highly visible presence at virtually all Chamber events.
An enthusiastic ambassador at First Friday, SOHO roundtable lunches, and Business After Hours events, Matt ensures prospective members feel welcome and new members become engaged. In addition, he has made time in his schedule to volunteer on planning committees for the Golf Outing and Auction & Taste. The public speaking skills he honed as a DJ continue to be in demand: he took the stage as emcee of the 2019 Auction & Taste.
As Northbrook Days Co-Chair, he has facilitated the Chamber’s Business After Hours on the festival’s opening night for several years, helping to build stronger connections between the Chamber and the beloved Village tradition.

“Matt Settler has volunteered and participated in every single committee the Chamber offers,” notes Dr. Gregg Gerstin, Align Wellness Center. “On top of that, the positive role he plays at all of our events makes the Chamber a more welcoming place for everyone. He deserves to be recognized for his great level of commitment and community spirit.”
Matt notes that his Chamber involvement has been beneficial to him on multiple levels. “Of course, being in the Chamber has been great for my business,” he notes, “but I also really enjoy helping out and giving back when needed. It’s gratifying to be appreciated for the work you put in.”

“I’m looking forward to continuing to grow my Chamber involvement,” says Matt. “Some people take for granted that they can go enjoy an event without understanding how much work goes into it. I want to help make things successful whenever I can.”
