Contest Fuels Local Shopping

Contest Fuels Local Shopping

The Chamber, in partnership with the Village of Northbrook, devoted staff and digital resources to a revved-up local shopping campaign this holiday season.  The centerpiece of the campaign was a Shop Northbrook contest with an eye-catching $500 prize.  The contest was inspired by President Kathryn Ciesla’s suggestion that residents should pledge to support local businesses during the holiday season.

Encouraging shoppers to visit a variety of retailers and restaurants, the contest asked individuals to submit receipts from five different stores or restaurants for the chance to win $500 in gift certificates from the Northbrook businesses of the winner’s choice. Over 60 entries were received, submitting proof of purchases from 85 village businesses.  The lucky winner, Northbrook resident Josef Mayer (pictured left), chose gift certificates from Sunset Foods and The Landmark Inn.

The contest was a new addition to the Chamber’s well-established social media marketing efforts, providing free promotional support for stores and restaurants throughout the year. During the holiday season, Chamber staff paid personal visits to 90+ businesses to take photos, learn about special offers, and share contest posters. Content created from the visits was featured on the Northbrook Shopping Elf Facebook and Instagram pages, with over 220 posts, stories and videos achieving a cumulative reach of more than 37,000.

At the same time, the Live Shop Dine Northbrook mobile text program boosted information about local holiday events while also sharing offers from more than 90 businesses. Over 3000 subscribers received weekly text messages through the season with news about the Hot Cocoa Stroll, holiday light shows, appearances by Santa Claus, and more. These messages were amplified through social media by the program vendor, NorthShore Loyalty.

“The Chamber has created a multi-platform approach to promote local shopping and dining, especially during the holidays,” notes Chamber President Tensley Garris. “Our partnership with the Village of Northbrook enables us to provide support for businesses free of charge. We look forward to future innovations and updates to make the programs even stronger in 2022.”
