To raise awareness about local and worldwide hunger, Oakton Community College will hold an “Empty Bowls at Oakton” event on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Professional and student potters from Chicago will contribute hundreds of unique bowls for this annual fundraiser. Donation of $15 includes a handcrafted bowl and a hot lunch. Proceeds benefit local food pantries, soup kitchens and other meal programs.

Whether they’ve been naughty or nice, have your pet’s photo taken with “ Santa Paws” at The Heartland Animal Shelter on Sunday, Dec. 6th between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Cost is a $5 tax deductible donation to the shelter; Includes electronic photos.

The Chicago Botanic Garden will hold a Hanukkah Concert on Sunday, Dec. 6 and a Christmas Concert on Saturday, Dec. 12. Concert times are 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in the Alsdorf Auditorium. Cost is $17 in advance $20 at the door. Visit for more information.

Celebrate the holiday season at the Cancer Wellness Center Holiday Open House on Wednesday, Dec. 9 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. There will be food, music, holiday crafts and special pampering activities along with a chance to mingle with staff and volunteers.

Glenbrook North and South High Schools will host their respective Winter Concerts on Tuesday, December 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of each school. The concerts feature the school bands, choirs and orchestras performing seasonal music and are free and open to the public.
