After serving as Senior Rabbi for 35 years at Congregation Beth Shalom (CBS), Rabbi Carl Wolkin will retire effective the end of June. Under Rabbi Wolkin’s leadership the Northbrook congregation grew from 500 families in 1980 to currently more than 1200 families. Rabbi Wolkin has also held numerous community interfaith leadership positions, including president of the Northbrook Clergy Association. CBS announced that Rabbi Aaron Melman will assume the position of Head Rabbi and Ari Averbach will join the staff as the new Assistant Rabbi, effective July 1st. CBS has been a member of the Chamber since 1974.

The sound of music will fill Village Green Park this summer with the return of the Northbrook Park District free Tuesday night outdoor concert series, June 9 – 30. Julie Strauss, will present “Citizens Forum: Is Immigration Reform Possible,” on Monday, June 29 at 6:30 p.m. at Covenant Village. Strauss has a PhD from Northwestern University and is a frequent lecturer on American politics. There is no charge to attend.

In celebration of its 60th anniversary, Des Plaines Office Equipment will host a Gala on Thursday, June 11, 5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at their Elk Grove Village location. In lieu of its annual donation of a portion of its June sales, this year Lewis Floor and Home will donate a kitchen consisting of cabinets, countertops and flooring to Cancer Wellness to support their new on-site demonstration kitchen, which will be used to focus on good nutrition before, during and after cancer treatment. This is the 15th year Lewis has supported the Center.

The Rotary Club of Northbrook recently announced that it awarded grants to Prism Pathways, an organization that helps economically disadvantaged high school students, and the Northbrook Symphony Orchestra (NSO). The NSO will use its grant to expand its educational initiative for Northbrook junior high school students.

Congratulations to American Weathermakers for receiving an Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts Award for the commercial “Breakdown” voiced by owner Dick Hochschild. The spot won an award in the category for owner-voiced, non-professional announcer radio commercials.

With the conclusion of the year-long construction project, the Northbrook Public Library will host an Open House on Saturday, June 13, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 14, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. to officially unveil the new improvements. New space includes: 40 person conference room with 80 inch LCD monitor; Pollak meeting room that accommodates 100 people; and 225 person Auditorium with comfortable theater seating. Other new features include better technology in meeting rooms for presentations; 4K Digital Projection System for movie presentation, improved acoustics in meeting spaces and compliance and ADA enhancements. North Shore Women’s Conference Rescheduled
The 8th annual North Shore Women’s Conference, originally planned for June, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 30. The annual event, hosted by North and Northwest suburban Chambers of Commerce, features a business expo along with the second annual Women in Business Leadership awards.
