Trustees Approve Shermer Rd. Closure During Festival
The iconic Northbrook Days summer carnival will return to Village Green Park this August, following an agreement between the Park District, Civic Foundation and Village Trustees to place some carnival rides and other functions on Shermer Road. As a result, Shermer will be closed for several days before and during the event, despite the objections of some stakeholders with businesses and residences on the street. The future form and location of the festival after 2020 has yet to be determined.
Now in its 96th year, the location of the festival has been in question due to the Park District’s assertion that carnival rides and heavy equipment harm the trees in the Village Green Park. Those rides are the leading source of revenue for the festival, which the Civic Foundation returns to the community in college scholarships and grants to non-profits. After a one-time relocation in 2019 to the Northbrook Court parking lot, Park District officials and the Civic Foundation developed a Village Green plan for 2020 with rides being placed on Shermer Road and the Village Green baseball field.
The Village Board, in two separate Committee of the Whole sessions, were enthusiastic about returning Northbrook Days to downtown but reluctant to close a central traffic artery. In particular, Trustees were sympathetic to the objections of some Shermer Road businesses whose front entrances would be less accessible and to noise concerns for apartment residents whose windows face the street. However, a review of other proposed sites revealed no workable alternatives, at least for this year. Trustees asked Civic to consider placing rides as far from the apartments as possible.
The parties are expected to evaluate their future options after the festival concludes its 2020 run.
